Trustees - who we are

Howard Green, Secretary

I am a healthcare manager by trade having founded a Children’s Hospice and worked for decades in, and as a consultant to, the National Health Service (NHS).  In ‘retirement’ I now have a thriving business in my neighbourhood as a handyman on a bicycle.  My first encounter with Julian was via the great Enfolded in Love given to my wife and I when we were first married.  When we moved to Norwich and completely fell in love with it, I sought out Julian initially as one of the City’s underrated jewels.  Only slowly, but with greater and great depth, did I fall in love with her unique insight into Divine Love, and I’ve been thrilled at how easy she now makes it for me to ‘talk God’ in our secularising world.  I’m so pleased to work alongside brilliant trustee colleagues in making her better known.

Annelise Saville

I am a retired person having spent much of my life in the publishing industry. My volunteer work includes working with young people in Scouting and also Duke of Edinburgh; I find the core values of these organisations of ‘making the world a better place’ reflect those of Julian of Norwich who also guided many to a ‘better place’. My family moved to Norwich some thirty years ago and I have always been impressed by the history of this great City and also the individuals within it (for example Amelia Opie and Elizabeth Fry — as well as Julian of Norwich) who pioneered respect, equality and kindness for those who couldn’t speak for themselves.

Margit Thøfner

I am a Senior Lecturer in art history at the Open University; I work on art, architecture and the visual, musical and material cultures of the medieval and early modern periods in north-western Europe. My first encounter with Julian of Norwich was during my PhD studies and arose from reading the works of great Spanish mystic St Teresa of Ávila. Out of this developed an interest in medieval mysticism, a remarkably rich tradition including many notable female authors such as Hildegard of Bingen, Catherine of Siena, Clare of Assisi, Birgitta of Sweden, Hadewijch of Antwerp, Marguerite Porete, Margery Kempe and of course Julian, with her distinct theological and literary take on the nature of the Divine. As a trustee of the Friends of Julian, I am honoured to help make Julian’s writings even better known as well as the broader traditions within which she lived and worked.

Rev Dr Gwynne Wright ObJN CJN

I am a retired priest ordained in Chicago USA. I now live in York England where I serve as honorary chaplain and guide at York Minster and assist in City Centre Churches.  I first met Julian in a daily reading on my wedding day in a quote that says before God made us, he loved us and that love is everlasting.  So I was blessed that my English husband introduced me to Julian’s writings and we visited Norwich several times.  I became an Oblate of Julian with the Order in Wisconsin. Once I retired to England I’ve visited the Shrine many times and now have become a Companion of Julian. The more I read Revelations, the more I learn and love Julian who teaches me more and more to love Jesus.  Love was his meaning and I pray I can live that each day.
